James is the oldest of four children; he has two brothers and one sister. He attended boarding school in Lancaster. After graduation James moved to Scotland to figure out his life and career choice. While in Scotland, he got a job at the Gilded Balloon Theatre. Not long after, James moved to London where he modeled for the STORM modeling agency and studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. James came to the United States after completing his studying at the LAMDA. In Hollywood he worked with acting coach Ivana Chubbuck.
James' first daytime role in the United States was as Ethan Cambias on ABC's All My Children in 2004. In May 2006, James joined the cast of Days of Our Lives as EJ Wells (now EJ DiMera). In 2009, he co-starred in the short-film The Way We Weren't as "The Man".
He is also co-founder of URTH Solution (you are the solution). URTH's goal is to help developing countries capitalize on their natural resources without harming the environment.
James is also a nature lover. He loves spending as much time outdoors as he can. He enjoys walking his dogs and taking hikes. He also has been known to take vacations where he backpacks through wild jungles. On his left forearm, James has a tattoo that illustrates this love of nature. It's from a William Wordsworth poem (1798), "Nature never did betray the heart that loved her".
